Introduction:

Hello from Canada! We are the students from the Grade 6 classroom at Thornhill Woods Public School. It is a beautiful and peaceful area and we are surrounded by forest. Most of us are able to walk to school within 10 minutes and can even go home with friends for lunch. As Canadians, we feel that we are all so lucky to live in a wonderful country with amazing people. What is it like in your country? We are looking forward to getting to know you better.

Our school logo is a North American Timber Wolf and our slogan is " Dream It, Believe It, Achieve It ".  We work together as a pack and never give up!

Lots of Canadians, including our teacher Mr. Carra, like to drink Tim Horton's coffee in the morning. It has become something we are known for, but Canada has so many other great foods. Some that we are famous for are poutine, beaver tails, maple syrup and much more. We produce 71% of the world’s maple syrup which is, by Canadian law, pure and natural.

Canada is beautiful even in the harsh winters. Nature is one of our main attractions so if you visit just go outside and enjoy the view. Did you know that Canada has more lakes than the rest of the world's lakes combined? In winter, our lakes freeze over and create great places to skate and play ice hockey.  Out of all the natural lakes in the world, more than 50 percent are situated in Canada. With our cold winters and hot summers it is so much fun to play different games with the different seasons. This winter has been unusually mild with plus temperatures except for one week which felt like -30 with the wind chill factor. We  love to play and watch hockey Our big city Toronto hockey team is called the Toronto Maple Leafs and they play at the Air Canada Centre which can seat almost 20,000 people. We also have our baseball team The Toronto Blue Jays and our basketball team The Toronto Raptors.

In our country, multiculturalism is an official policy. This means that we value the dignity of all our citizens regardless of their racial or ethnic origins, their language, or their religious affiliation. We are a free country and believe that in Canada everyone has a right to have good education and health care. As a class we’ve been learning about many of the issues facing others in the world today and we are realizing that not everyone enjoys the rights that we do. We believe that they should enjoythe same rights as us because no matter where in the world "a kid is a kid".

We are looking forward to learning together with you and doing what we can to help make the world a better place.

Story of a Syrian Family by H.M

"Before the war, we had our life, our parties, we had our journeys inside and outside of Syria. People

were rich. We were not used to seeing people in the streets, begging..."

Poems and Artwork:

This next comic strip was inspired by the book "The Breadwinner" by Deborah Ellis we have been reading.
It's the story of a girl in Afghanistan named Parvana and how her life has been affected by the Taliban.
An excellent book by a Canadian author that we enjoyed and highly recommend.
We're on the second book right now!

Other material we've been exploring:

Here is a great link that we used to have some discussions about children around the world and where they sleep. Check it out:

Hi Thornhill Woods Public School,

we like your photo very much and we like the slogan of your school. Our school doesn't have a slogan but we have our song - a hymn and we sing it in Ukrainian, English and German. We think that we should have a slogan too. You write you are in class 6 and so are we, we are 12-13 and how old are you?

Your story about Canada is really interesting and we even used a little of it at our Geography class. Ukrainian history is closely connected with Canada as there are a lot of Ukrainians in Canada.

We admire your contibution into the project. Most of all we like the maple tree with the child'rights leafs. You have been so creative with the poem. The link we have found on your page cornerning the fate of children all over the world really makes us sad. Everybody should do his\her best to stop violance and give children safe life.

Thank you very much for your work.

Hi Thornhill Woods Public School,

Your posters are really amazing, we admire your efforts to creat such a great contribution into this project.  We have discussed the topics of these media pieces and we think that they illustrate very clearly the main ideas of the project.  We are sure these posters gathered together should be published and distributed among people.

We also think that what we all need is to show those who are responsible for the crimes that are committed towards the children in different countries.

Thank you very much for your wonderful and such sad work.

Ukraine,

Kirovograd Collegium
