Contributions Challenge 1:

Hello! We are so excited to share our learning with you!

We started learning about the Right to a Safe Home through lots of discussion. You can read and see our thoughts here:  https://mskorverblog.wordpress.com/2016/03/29/886/

Then we started on our projects. Most students choose to create art projects to show their learning- they then wrote or video taped their explanations.  You can see our full blog post with links to all of our projects here: https://mskorverblog.wordpress.com/2016/03/29/937/

We are excited to see your projects!

Contributions Challenge 2:

Hello! We all wrote letters to Urmila. Overall, our class was quite shocked to find out about her life and what she has gone through. We agree that she is very brave. Below are our letters. I've also uploaded them as a word file to the wiki.  https://childrensrights2016eng6.pbworks.com/w/file/107667527/Dear%20Urmila.docx

We are excited to hear her response!

Dear,Urmila

Hi my name is Aiden and I live in Warman Saskatchawan  Canada.  I go to Warman Comunity Middle School.  We have been recently learning about Kamalari girls and the Kamalari system. And that you and other girls have been taken when you where very young and were forced to work. And I heard that the rate of female murders has gone up.  What did you do when you were a slave?  And How old were you when you were taken to slavery?

when we started learning about this I was sad and shocked that children were being taken into slavery when they were so young.  If I met you in real life I would say I'm sorry that you had to go through what you went through

                                                                                                                                 Sincerely Aiden

Dear Urmila,

Hi i'm Ben I live in canada I got wcms.  We have been learning about you and other kamalari girls and child labour.  We learned that you got sold to work off debt.  And murder rates were going up really fast for female.  We heard fifty or seventy kamalari girls protested in front of the town hall.  What was it like to be a slave how bad was it can you rate out of ten.  How old were you when you started being a slave.  Rate out of ten how happy were you when you weren't a slave.

when I first heard about kamalari girls I thought it was stupid and sad.  If could meet you I would say you're the best person in the world

 sincerely,

Ben

Dear Urmila,

My name is Ben from Warman, Saskatchewan in Canada. I go to WCMS (Warman Community Middle School).  We have been learning about you and the Kamalari System. We all think that abusing girls is very wrong. It is smart how those guys add bills and more bills and I'm glad people like you are smarter than them and can stop it. When researching I saw that some former Kamalari girls might be a Kamalari girl again, why is that? What would happen to you if you attempted to run away then get caught? I know there is thousands of Kamalari girls out there and you are trying to stop it. You should be very proud of yourself. Is there any adult Kamalari girls? If so do they get harder jobs and worse punishments or is it the same as the kids?  You guys should make an program for them to learn after their work and force the prime minister to shorten how much a kid has to work or  even make it so they dont work at all. But it probably takes time so you could start with shortening then shorten then shorten and then no more.

When I saw this I was thankful that I dont have to go through that. I'm sorry you had to go through that and what you are doing is awesome. I can't imagine my little brother having to do that and then get abused. It reminds me when my older brother told me there was a slave from world war II that came to his school. He said they had to work and work and then get punished. Once again thank you and good luck!

                                                                                             Sincerely,

                                                                                                               Ben

Dear Urmila,

Hello, My name is Brianna. I live in Warman, Saskatchewan. I attend school at Warman Community Middle School. In class we have been learning about the Kamalari system and how you  escaped from the system and are helping get other girls out of the Kamalari girl system. I also learned that some of these girls are as young as 4 years old.  I think that we are learning about this so that maybe the Kamalari girl population goes down when we are older. How can you help these girls get out of the system? Since you got out of the Kamalari girl system have you seen your family? Do you know how much you were sold for?

When I heard of this I was very surprised because I did not know about any of this I

also felt bad for all the girls that I could not do anything about it. If I could meet you in

real life I would say sorry that you had to go through that and I hope that none of your

other family has to go through that. I can't even imagine if my little sister had to go

through that because she is only 5 years old.

            Sincerely,

Brianna

Dear Urmila,

My name is Brooke and I am 11 years old.I live in Warman, Saskatchewan. I go to Warman Community Middle School also known as WCMS , We have a new school and 600 kids / Students. We have been learning about Kamalari System. Iv learned that the Kamalari System is when parents dont have an of money to pay for everyone or for they're house. So they sell they're daughters to work for money so they can pay for everyone and they're house. They can be as young as 4 years old! Was there only one girl that was working or more than one? Did parents have to sell there daughters or did they have a choice? Why would you want to sell your daughter because there part of your family and not a pet they deserve the same respect as any other human.

I thought it was odd for someone to sell there daughter to go work for them to earn money. I think that this should stop and the government should help the people that need help because not just the places that have good conditions should have all the nice stuff others should too. This makes me feel bad for all the others that have to sell there daughters and think that we need to help and not just know about it and not help. If I were to meet Urmila in person I would hug her and ask her so many questions. The questions I would ask... How do you feel about this happening? What is it like to be a Kamalari girl? Was it boring? How many siblings do you have? Are you still in touch with your family? Was it hard doing work for other people? What were some of the jobs you did for the people you worked for? How old were you when you were sold to be in the Kamalari System? Thats all the questions I have for Urmila!

Sincerely,

Brooke

DearUrmala,

Hello my name is carter  I live in Saskatchewan, Canada. I go to warman community Middle school .

We have been learning about the Kalamari girls and that they are sold into to slavery  mostly when they are young. They are mostly sold because there family has debt to the family there selling them to. I think that selling people should stop they should just work and pay off the money The reason we have bin learning about child labour and slavery is because we are in the Global Teenager Challenge.

Was it scary being a Kalamari girl and how much money did you get paid. Did you ever get hert well being a slave why did you get sold into slavery. Do you visit your family and do you also still talk to your family lots. Do you still live in Nepal. When did you get to learn school stuff like math and science etc. Is slavery and child labour like the Kalmari girls still popular in Napal.

Sincerely Carter,

Dear Urmila,

Hello im Carter from Warman, WCMS. We have been learning about the Kamilari system and how it happen and how bad it is. We learnt that they were sold at a young age for low prices. How much were you sold for. how much do kamilaris usually get sold for. We also learnt that the work in gardens, fields, kitchens, around the house, etc. Where did you work, kitchen, field, etc. I also learnt that they dont get treated well, and not fed much.  How much did they feed you. What did you feel like when you got sold.

When i started learning about this i felt sad. I felt  bad for all the people who had to go through this.  I feel really bad for you and everyone else who went through this. I am very grateful I live in Canada and that Im not a slave.  If I could meet you in real life I would say im sorry about how you were living and how your childhood was and that i feel really bad for you. if i could get you to relive your childhood as not a slave i would. Thanks For reading my blog.

Sincerely,

Carter  C

Dear Urmila,

Hello, My name is Carter. I am 12 years old and I live in Warman, Saskatchewan. I go to Warman Community Middle School. We are apart of the Global Teenager Project. In school we have been learning about the Kamalari system and how bad it is and also how people are fighting to stop it.  Children have been sold at the age of 4 and have been kept till there teenagers. It's just not right that people are selling there children because they need money. We have also learned that Kamalari girls will wake at sun up and work till sun down is that true? When you were a Kamalari girl did you live in the same house as the people who bought you? Was it hard to be a Kamalari girl?

When we started learning about Kamalari girls I didn't know what they were until we learned more about them. When I heard what they did and why they were sold I was surprised that people would do it. If my sister was sold as a Kamalari girl I would not know what to do. I am thankful that I live in Canada and I don't have to witness or live in a country with Kamalari girls. If I met you in real life I would thank you for all that you are doing for Kamalari girls. I just have one more question. Was it scary to be a Kamalari girl?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 Sincerely,

                                                                                                     Carter R

Dear Urmila,

Hi my name is carter and I live in Warman, SK. The school I go to is called the Warman community Middle School. I have learned that you were sold at the age of 4 and then you escaped from it at 17 years old and then you started school then. We are learning about this because we are part of the global teenager project.  I have one question for you, so here it is, How many sisters and brothers do you have and were they slaves to.

My reactions to this when I learned about this was guilty and I was guilty because I felt that since I have such a good life and  kids who are sold dont have such a great life because they are kinda lonely. I have a few questions for you. were your parents slaves to or were they poor. Was your life miserable.

Dear Urmila,

My name is Cassidy I am 11 years old and  I am writing to you from Warman , Saskatchewan. I am very excited to be writing to you today! I attend Warman Community Middle School. At my school we have about 600 kids! I am in Ms.Korver's grade 6 class. In our class we have been learning about Kamalari girls and the Kamalari system. We have learned about the work they have to do, the poor working conditions, abuse and charges the families owe. I would also like to know how many jobs did you do in 1 day? How many other girls worked with you? What were your living conditions like? Did you get fed? Did you work at the same house all your life? Do you know your family? Were your jobs indoors and outdoors? How old were you when you were free?  Last, how much did your family owe?

My reaction to learning about Kamalari system and that you were so young when you had to leave your families and I could never picture my little sister handling that! That seems like it would be really hard and I'm sorry you had to live like that but I'm glad that you are free now. It made me feel good that you stood up for people because other wise it would still be that way and you would still be there! If I met you in person I would say you were brave and that I'm glad you are free and now speaking to tell people it needs to stop! Thank you for making our world better for everyone in child labour and inspiring people around the world!!!!

             Sincerely,

                       Cassidy

Dear Urmila,

My name is Jael. I live in Warman Saskatchewan and go to Warman Community Middle School. We have been learning about the Kamilari system. Are class is in the global teenager project. I have learned that this system is were parents sell their children because they are in debt, also that when they live in that house most people just make them stay longer because they gave them food and ect. What kinds of jobs did you need to do? We learned that children as young as 4 need to do work. Do you keep in contact with your parents?

I was sad when I learned that children need to live like this. But I am glad you don't have to live like this anymore. Also I am happy that you are helping other people who are living like this. How long did you work at that house?  Was there other people working at that house with you?

Sincerely                                                                                                                                                                 Jael

Dear Urmila,

My name is Kayla I am 12 years old. I live in Warman and I go to Warman Community Middle School. We have been learning about kamalari girls in school. What we have learned about them is they get hit a lot if they do something wrong. They all so don't get paid and they don't get a lot to eat. We all so learned how you escape from child labour. Where you sad to leave your family? Did they hit you a lot? Was it hard to escape? Do you miss your family? Do you know where your family is? Do you get a lot of letters from other people?

When I was learning about this it made me sad because they don't get all the food that we get and they don't get time to play or just relax. It was sad to here that 4 year old girls have to work. If I could see you I would say good job of working so hard to make are world a better place. You are like a super hero that is saving girls from the kamalari system.

         Sincerely,

                    Kayla

~ Dear Urmila,

Hi I am Kirsten I go to Warman community middle school ; I live in Warman, Saskatchewan . My class have been learning about child labor and kalimari girls. So far what I understand is a kalimari girl is a slave that is not aloud to go to school and have to clean all day and work all day to and that get abused and sold from there parentsDo kalimari girls get abused like hit? Have you been hit and smacked? One last question. Do you still stay in touch with your parents?

When I read about kalimari girls I was so angry like why is there so much hate over girls? If I could meet you I would hug you and say I am sorry for what you went through.Right now that i am reading about this I just want to go over there and stop this savory.

                                                                                                  Sincerely.

Dear Urmila,

My name is Maddie and I live in Warman, Saskatchewan. I go to the Warman Community Middle School. My grade 6 class is participating in the Global Teenager Project and has been learning about child labor and the Kamalari System. We are talking about children so young being sold into slavery, it makes me so sad and I can't believe you had to go through it. When ever I think of you I wonder if my little sister could handle being a slave, I really doubt it.

I know that your fighting for other girls but are you scared for the other girls that are slaves? After being freed do you have contact with your parents? Learning about this makes me feel so helpless! Is there anything we can do to help out? I think you are so brave to fight back against child labour. Honestly I don't think I could do that. I wish I could meet you right now and hear your whole story of you being a slave.

                                                                                                                                            Sincerely,

Maddie

Dear Urmila,

Hi! My name is Miranda,I am a 6 grader to Warman community middle school, And I live in Warman, SK. In my social class we are learning about kamalari girls and how we can help free them from slavery. We have learned lots about you and other girls and how they were impacted by slavery. Some other things we have learned about is how young people are sold by there parents, how they are abused and are not able to eat or get food or clothes if there owners get them some they have to work it off. Some of my questions I have for you is what are the dots on your heads? How much were you sold for? How much debt did you have to pay off?

When we started learning about this I did not believe that there were still slaves in the world but when we learned how young people are sold for and that there parents are the ones selling them i was REALLY sad that you had to go through that your self. :(  If you were here i would give you a big hug and say I´m sorry for what had happened  to you.

Sincerely

Miranda (_)

Dear Urmila,

Hello I am Nik and I live in Warman, Saskatchewan. I go to Warman Community middle school. We have been learning about the kamarli system and the kamarli system is when poor families or people that owe someone a lot of money and the people that owe money sell a child into slaves and the kids work until they pay off the lone. The only question I have is how much money did you have to owe the family you worked for.I think people should learn about because it is bad and girls age 4 are cooking  and cleaning the house. All I know about about this is that it is bad and it should stop.

I was so suprised and that they use girls 4 years old and should stop but they are still doing it and urmila you should keep on doing what you are doing.I was sorta mad and if my sister had to do all of that stuff I would get really mad and sad and if my sister was Urmila I think she would do what you are doing Urmila. If i mert urmila.Right now I would say good job and say that she is brave.I would ask her do you still know the person that slaved you and would you put them in jail because what they did to you.

                                                                                                                             Sincerly Nik

Dear Urmila,

My name is Rhett, I live in Warman, Saskatchewan and I go to school at Warman Community Middle School. Here in Saskatchewan we have lot's of farm land and also my family has a farm. During school we have been learning about Kamalari System and it has been really interesting and sad that you had to go through that for 11 year's. I have one question for you and that is how did it feel when you finaly went to bed, did you cry or anything like that.

My reaction to this when i learned this is that when i think of my life and than i see that other kid's are being sold at a very young age and having to be treated very bad like being abused and having to  pratically having to take care of them.

Dear Urmila,

Im Tasha, I go to school at Warman Community Middle School in Warman SK, and our class is learning about Child Labour. Right now we are learning about the Kamalari System. While we were researching about it, our teacher told us about you, and how you are a former Kamalari girl. What was it like to be a Kamalari girl? Did you ever have any free time? We learned that some children become Kamalari girls at ages as young as 4. How young were you when you became a Kamalari girl?
While we were researching this, it made me feel kind of upset and helpless, because I couldn't do anything about it. I was wondering how you feel about it? Most of our class felt different about the Kamalari System after we read about it, did your perspective of Kamalari girls change after your experience? Also, Nobody in our class knows how to say Kamalari, could you maybe tell us?

Thanks for reading my letter, Sincerely,
Tasha

Dear Urmila,

Hello, my name is Taya I live in Saskatchewan I go to Warman Community Middle School. Lately in school , We have been learning about child labour and Kamalari girls. What I have learned about Kamalari system is that most girls get sold for money by their parents that would make me so mad. Did your parents tell you before they sold you or just surprised you? I also know that most Kamalari girls work in a richer household and do not make any money. Did you try to escape from the house you were in? Since you have started to protect the Kamalari girls. Have been able to get any girls out? If most people were willing to sell there children what will happen next? We also learned that some girls are beaten or burned if chores are not done right. I find that super sad and mean.

While we were learning about it made me feel very lucky and proud to live where I live. Also, That girls my age are slaves! If i could meet you in person I would be exciting. I would say that you are very brave for holding up for around 11 years of your life working for paying off your parents debt. You are a great role model. You should be very proud of yourself. Do you have any siblings? Best of the luck to you in your life.

Sincerely,

Taya

Thank you so much Warman school for your very interesting introduction!! The prezi gives a lot of information about your school and Canada. What a beautiful school building you have. It looks as if it is well suited to how students today want to learn. The padlet is an excellent tool to use to give everyone a voice in the class for an initial opinion about Children's Rights.
Well done Warman Saskatchewan ! It is great to have you in the circle!
